22. Avoid Burnout – Theresa Squire

Theresa Squire is a Broadway costume designer and served as the resident costume designer for Keen Company for 10 years. She’s a Pilates instructor and a mom and learned the hard way how to avoid burnout by setting clear boundaries.

To assist everyone who works in performing arts and entertainment across the country, The Actors Fund is collaborating with the community to help navigate these challenging times.

  • “And I had this moment where I was like… I’m not a fashion designer, I’m a costume designer.”
  • “Sewing clothing is like construction. It’s math and sciences and algebra.”
  • “Building is what we say in the industry. Not making or sewing.”
  • “We are trying to get people to understand that costume design isn’t easy.”
  • “When you’re working Off Off Broadway, you’re the designer, you’re the assistant designer, you’re the electrician, you’re the master electrician.”
  • “I love the moment when you see it all on stage and it makes sense and it’s a world.”
  • “There’s an innovation opportunity right now to tell stories to the world that need to be told.”
